Maintaining your HVAC System
Curt Smith, Joel Smith Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.Wednesday, April 8, 2020At a previous Sunrise, we had Curt Smith from Joel Smith Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. speak about the importance of maintaining your HVAC system. Below are his 3 tips and takeaways-
1 – Regular maintenance of your air conditioning system will lead to better performance, energy savings, and the longevity of the equipment. In areas with large amounts of Cottonwood trees, the outdoor unit needs to be cleaned 2-3 times from May -July depending on usage. You can easily clean most units with a mild garden sprayer.
2 – Should you cover your air conditioner? We never recommend covering the unit with plastic or tarps. This can cause two scenarios, first it creates a nice environment for mice to gather and make a winter home. These little critters will cause lots of damage to the unit. Second, it can cause moisture to build up and corrode electrical parts, creating unnecessary failures and repairs. Covering the top only to keep out debris and falling icicles is ok.
3 – Air flow is crucial in your system operating properly. Any 1” filter should be replaced every 30 days. If you have a filter that is 4” thick it can last for 3-4 months.
